Howdy Longhorns! Welcome back to the Longhorn Sports Report. We had a huge week last week and I plan on covering all of it right here, right now.
Lets hop right in!
Coach Cavallo’s Football Program got a thrilling 38-37 overtime win in what might have been the best game in school history! The ‘Horns started off on the wrong foot trailing 17-0 after the first quarter. Defensive End Chase Adams (SR) turned into prime JJ Watt when he jumped on a short pass and returned it for a pick-six. Following a Field Goal from Josh Matula (SO) the Falcons would go back to the locker rooms up 17-10. The Longhorns continued their comeback, scoring 21 unanswered points to lead 31-17. But nothing good ever lasts as the Falcons scored a quick touchdown and recovered the onside kick. On their last drive, Foster scored again and the game went to overtime. The ‘Horns started with the ball and scored quickly to go up by 7. On Foster’s drive they scored in two plays to bring it within one. Head Coach Shane Hanks decided to risk it all going for two and the win. Luckily for George Ranch, the pass was deflected away, giving the Longhorns the wild win! Next up, GRHS faces off with Taylor High School at 7 pm Thursday, August 31st at Rhodes Stadium in Katy, Texas. Show up and wear Neon!
Coach Forshee’s Volleyball program went 1-1 in 20-6a play since our last writing, handling FB Clements 3-0 and falling to FB Austin 3-0. Sophomore and Vanderbilt Volleyball commit Sydney Bryant, won Player of the Match for her performance against FB Clements. Huge applause to her for both of her accomplishments this past week. The Lady Longhorns look forward to hosting FB Travis, Friday, September 1st, at GR then go on to face FB Ridge point on Tuesday, September 5th, at Ridge Point. Good luck to the ladies!
Coach Witt’s Tennis Program won a tightly contested 10-9 affair against FB Travis this past Tuesday, August 29th. This win pushes their 20-6a record to 2-1 before facing rivals FB Ridge Point, Tuesday, September 5th, at Ridge Point High School.
Longhorn XC competed in the BFND Invitational this past weekend. Coach Dutch’s Girls team placed second overall with medals going to Sophia Nguyen, Caylin Smith, and Cassandra Alvarez. Another impressive performance from an extremely talented side. Coach Throop’s Boys team had one runner place in the top 15 with Travis Morrey being the ‘Horns lone runner to earn a medal. Both squads will participate in the Seven Lakes Invitational this Saturday, September 2nd, at Seven Lakes High School. Good luck to all of our runners!
And finally, Longhorn Water Polo have had a great start to the season. Both boys and girls have played 5 matches so far winning their most recent matches against FB Kempner. The boys also played FB Hightower Tuesday, August 29th, and came out on top 16-1. Both squads travel to Spring Branch to faceoff with Stratford High School, Friday, September 1st, at the SBISD Natatorium.
That does it for this week. Make sure to come back next week for another action-packed Longhorn Sports Report!
