Howdy Longhorns! Welcome back to the Longhorn Sports Report. Today we will into the start of the 2023 Football season and check into how the rest of our winners did to start the school year. Lets dive right in!
Coach Cavallo’s Longhorns and their highly anticipated football season begins at 7:30 pm on Friday, August 25th at Longhorn Field. The Longhorns finished 6-6 overall last season barely sneaking into the 20-6A UIL playoffs where they unfortunately were knocked out by Cinco Ranch. The ‘Horns traveled to Rhodes Stadium last week to face those same Cinco Ranch Cougars in a scrimmage. Unfortunately, there are no stats from this scrimmage. However, when given the chance to talk to starting RB, Jaden Shelton (SR) said, “(Quote).” Make sure to get your tickets before they sell out and pack those stands at GRHS!
Coach Forshee’s Longhorns Volleyball Program made it all the way to the championship game in the “Big Mac Attack Varsity Tournament” but unfortunately fell to Humble 2-0. The Lady Longhorns also played Seven Lakes in their first game in front of the Ranch Rowdies. Unfortunately, the Ladies couldn’t take down the Spartans, falling 3-0. This finishes off their preseason tournament matches as they open 20-6A play Friday, August 25th, at Clements High School when they take on the Lady Rangers.
Coach Witt’s GRHS Tennis Program handled business this past week winning 18-1 over Sterling High in a non-district match before traveling up to Austin High to defeat the FB Austin Bulldogs 12-8. These wins push the Longhorns overall record to 5-3 and 20-6A record to 1-1. GRHS take on FB Travis Tuesday, August 29th at home, and then travels to face FB Ridge Point at RPHS.
Lady Longhorn Cross Country competed in the Sealy Frio Friday Night Lights Invitational; The Ladies placed fourth out of tens teams competing with Sophia Nguyen placing fourth out of 93 runners. Coach Throop’s boys squad competed at the Sealy Invitational as well, placing 15th overall, with Travis Morrey placing 13th. Both XC programs travel to Cy-Fair High to the BFND CY-Fair Invitational Saturday, August 26th.
