Week 5 Longhorns Sports Report

By Julian Munoz, Sports Writer

Howdy Longhorns! Welcome back to the Weekly Longhorns Sports Report here at The Ranch. This week was action-packed with wins for the Longhorns in all sports starting with Longhorns Football and ending with Cross Country.

George Ranch WON a tough game against FB Travis, 24-21 on Thursday, September 22nd at Tully Stadium. This action-packed game was by far the cleanest and smoothest game of the year,  just in time for Rival Week vs. Ridge Point.  QB Dieon Drinkard (Jr) looked comfortable in and outside the pocket. He threw for 247 yards and 2 touchdowns! His long for the day was a 62-yard bomb to SR Gregor Jones.  Jones hauled in two touchdowns for the Horns; it was the best game of his career at GR to date.  The running game continues to be GRs’ strong suit as Jaden Shelton rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown on 26 attempts.  This was by far the best offensive game we have seen this season.  On defense the ‘Horns had a season high 4 sacks with Trent Turner (Sr), Cody Ford (Jr), and Chase Adams (Jr) all getting in on the fun. On top of the sacks the ‘Horns forced 3 turnovers with Brandon Mays (Jr) and Colin Mclemore (Sr) both getting interceptions and Chase Adams forcing and recovering a fumble. George Ranch have caught fire right at the right time as we face archrival FB Ridge Point High School in a cannot miss Friday Night Lights game at Traylor Stadium. (September 30th)

Gregor Jones had the following to say regarding the Longhorns hot 3-0 start to 20-6a district play- “A great team win to get us to 3-0 in district, but the job isn’t finished, we now focus on Ridge Point and to go 1-0 next week.”

We need to pack those stands at Traylor Stadium on September 30th for a special rivalry edition of Friday Night Lights against the Ridge Point Panthers .

The Lady Longhorns continued their great season by sweeping FB Elkins High School 3-0 on Thursday, 9/22. Madelynn Coy (Fr) earned the first POTM of her career here at the ranch. A special congrats to her and the Lady Longhorns outstanding performance on Thursday. The ‘Horns look to improve on their 20-6a 6-2 record on Friday, 9/30 against FB Austin High School.

Longhorn Tennis did not have any games this past week. They host FB Elkins High School on October 4th.

Travis Morrey was the lone runner to place in the top 10 for GR at the Kempner Cougar Invitational for Boys XC. Congrats to him on his great season so far. Varsity girls finished 6th place overall at the Hoka Invitational in Austin, TX.

George Ranch Baseball alum Stone Garrett made his return to Houston on September 27th as the Houston Astros hosted the Arizona D-Backs.  Coach Kobza, Coach Rodriguez and Coach White brought members of the Longhorns Baseball team to downtown Houston to Minute Maid Park to catch the action.  The evening started with a special trip down on to the field for Arizona’s pre-game BP; some got selfies with Hall-of-Famer, Jose’ Cruz and all met Garrett and took pictures with the DBacks star behind home plate.  Garrett stepped up to the plate in the top of the ninth as a pinch hitter and received a loud ovation from the Longhorn faithful.  Garrett struck out as the Astros defeated the D-Backs 10-2, but it was a historic night for Garrett and all of George Ranch. Garrett also returned to the campus to lecture the current members of the program and reminisce about his time here at George Ranch. (pictured)

That’s it for this week. We will catch y’all next time on the Longhorn Sports Report.
