Why the 90s Are “All That”
October 3, 2013
Looking back at it now, when we think of the 1990s we really want to say that it was just a decade ago, but it’s actually been 23 years since the 90s. Most young adults nowadays have fond memories of their childhood. From games, TV shows, clothing and accessories, we can still remember why the 90s were All That.
Entertainment was booming in the 1990s. With the new technology coming out for gaming, it was hard to see any teenager or young adult not playing around. Who could ever forget going home on your old, bulky, desktop computer and to pass the time away you’d pull up the totally tight game 3D Pinball for Windows – “Space Cadet”. Even when you weren’t playing on the computer or playing outside, you would most likely be found attached to the latest and greatest gaming consoles. Remember the Super Nintendo? How about Sega Mega Drive/Genesis or the PlayStation? Do you still remember how to fix the game to play on the Nintendo 64? The old cartridge games were iconic of the 90s. Just by simply blowing into the cartridge, you were able to start the game up and play to your heart’s content.
“Roses are red, violets are blue, Jazz and I are black, but, Carlton, what are you?” Will Smith said in “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” from the episode Def Poet’s Society. Watching the good ol’ TV shows was a past time; it was something to do with the family and have a good laugh at all the shows. Just to name a few favorites, “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air”, “Sister Sister”, “Legends of the Hidden Temple”, “All That”, “Figure It Out”, “Friends”, “Hey Arnold”, “Kenan and Kel”, and oh so many more. These TV shows didn’t just make us laugh, but they made us cry or get angry. These TV shows connected to everyone on a personal level, teaching moral values as well as having a real sense to them.
Another iconic part of the 90s was the fashion trends. Do you remember waking up in the morning and putting on some overalls? What about a nice flannel shirt? The best part of the 90s was that you could wear basically anything and be in style. Whether you sported the modern preppy look with boat shoes, khakis, and a nice blazer, or you felt going hip-hop for the day wearing a big baseball jacket with your baggy carpenter jeans and often a snapback hat when you forgot to slick your hair back or your bleached blonde hair wasn’t co-operating that day, you could frequently change your look and still be hip. Don’t forget to wear accessories with your outfit! Girls would hardly be seen without some hoop ear rings or a scrunchie in their hair. Guys would make sure to wear their chain wallet and slap bracelet.
The 90s was a cool time. With a change towards the youth of the time, it’s no wonder why many of us look back at the 90s and sigh in remembrance. It was a good time to live and we’ll always look back and say the 90s were All That.
