Every year, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo takes place in NRG Stadium, home of the Houston Texans. With lots of entertainment and things to do, many families love to go, to get a taste of the excitement. This year, the rodeo will kick off on Tuesday, March 3, with the band Midland playing. The festivities will last all the way to the 22, where Luke Bryan will close it out. Whether you enjoy the cowboys, music, or fair, there’s a little something for everyone.

Super Series

A tournament-like competition that lasts a total of 19 days, the Super Series is broken up into five three day series. After that, the winners advance to a Semifinal round, with a few making the Wild Card. The top four are taken from each Semifinal, and the top two are taken from the Wild Card, leading to a ten man Championship, where they pick the top four (known as the shootout round) to ride once more, to win it all. The winner wins $50,000, along with any other money they won along the way. As a bonus, they also get a custom saddle and belt buckle, and they are invited to compete again the next year.

The events of the Super Series are:

  • Bareback Riding
  • Barrel Racing
  • Bull Riding
  • Saddle Bronc
  • Steer Wrestling
  • Tie-Down Roping
  • Team Roping

Activities

Apart from the Super Series and concerts, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has many other things to offer, ranging from a fine glass of wine, to chilling with animals in the petting zoo. AGVENTURE, which is featured in Hall A of NRG, has many things to do. At the birthing center, you can watch baby animals take some of their first steps. Or you could head on over to the Honey Bee exhibit, and watch as the bees work, as you learn more about honey. Have little kids? Take them to the petting zoo, or go on a pony ride! If you don’t want to get hands on, you can watch as baby chicks hatch and walk around, or you could go check out the rabbits.

If animals aren’t your thing, you could always check out the carnival hosted just outside. With lots of food and fun, the carnival can be a great way to spend the day. You can get into the carnival just by having a ground pass, or a Rodeo/Concert ticket. If you’re not one to wait in line, you could buy a FastPass for only $25. They carnival also offers lots of food, to keep your energy up throughout the day.

Some rides may have height limits, which can be discouraging for little kids, that’s why The Junction exists. The Junction is a place that has activities that your little kids would surely love. From farming to even more carnival games, The Junction offers a wide variety of things to do. Have a risk-taker kid? Sign them up to do Mutton Busting, where you climb on top of a sheep, and hold on while it runs.

Just want to sit back and relax? Head on over to the Champion Wine Garden. At the garden, you can try over 70 different types of wine, while you enjoy live music.
