McDonald’s across the nation are beginning to turn their logo upside down, but why?

If you drive down to the McDonald’s location in Lynwood, California, you may have a slight shock when you see those infamous golden arches suddenly flipped upside down, so that the usual “M” is replaced with a  “W. But this isn’t some prank, it was done on purpose to celebrate women everywhere for International Women’s Day.

On Thursday, McDonald’s will turn it’s logo upside down on both Twitter and Instagram, and select restaurants across the nation will rock W’s on their uniforms.  McDonald’s Chief Diversity Officer Wendy Lewis states “in celebration of women everywhere, and for the first time in our brand history, we flipped our iconic arches for International Women’s Day in honor of the extraordinary accomplishments of women everywhere and especially in our restaurants… from restaurant crew and management to our C-suite of senior leadership, women play invaluable roles at all levels and together with our independent franchise owners we’re committed to their success.”

A  number of brandsfor example, Old Navy and Barbie, have also created their own special ways to honor the day. However, some companies, like BrewDog, which debuted a demeaning product-  a “beer for girls”, more formally known as Pink IPA, which is being criticized for using International Women’s Day to advertise to women in what some consider an objective manner.

But despite slight issues like that, our world’s brands are coming together to not only recognize women’s achievements but also honor and celebrate the ladies that make our nation great.
